Did you know that most people are never actually taught how to study or manage homework?
As a result, time spent on school work is usually very inefficient and often futile.
SOAR® Study Skills is a simple system of easy, student-friendly strategies that help students complete homework and study much more efficiently. As students become more efficient, they begin to learn more and their grades go up while their study time goes down! Students who learn the SOAR® System get the homework help they need by learning how to efficiently:
- Manage time
- Organize papers
- Take notes
- Plan homework & projects
- Improve reading comprehension
- Set goals
- Organize space
- Take tests
- Communicate with parents & teachers
- Write papers
Most students (and a lot of adults) often believe that…
“Study skills are boring!”
There is actually a good explanation for the reputation that study skills have developed over the years because a lot of boring things are labeled as “study skills”…
Learning how to use guide words in a dictionary…a necessary skill, but boring!
SQ3R…a reading strategy with many merits, but begs the question, “Who wants to take the time to do all five steps?” Boring!
Identifying the main idea and supporting details on endless worksheets? Another important skill, but a boring process.
Mind maps and t-charts…these are not necessarily boring if you know how to use them properly, but that is precisely the problem; most students don’t know when to use them!
In fact, the two biggest enemies of any study skills program are:
- Resistance from students, and
- Confusion about when to use each skill!
The resistance is not only caused by the notion that study skills are boring, but the fact that traditional learning skills, such as SQ3R, take a LOT of extra time! Let’s face it…do we Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review our own reading material?
The second point of resistance is confusion about when to use each skill. Most study skills programs are originally developed for college students and expect a certain level of maturity from students. However, even college students have trouble evaluating various chapters of a text-book to determine that a t-chart is best for taking notes on one section, but a mind map is a better option for a different section. This process is certainly not age-appropriate for middle school or most high school students!
The Cure for Study Skills Resistance and Confusion
The antidote to ‘boring study skills’ is a system of skills and strategies that are (listed in order of importance):
- Time-efficient,
- Effective, and
- Apply across all content-areas!
Time-efficiency is the first and most critical step for student buy-in!
If students perceive that a strategy or skill is going to take a long time and involve a lot of steps, they will check-out immediately. However, if they realize that the focus is on reducing study time, they perk up and are willing to pay attention
Next, they must be effective! When students discover how much easier it can be to organize, take notes, read text-books, and study for tests, they will automatically develop the intrinsic motivation to use their new-found skills and develop more of their own!
Finally, the skills must apply across all content areas. When study skills apply across all content areas, there is NO confusion about when to use a skill. It’s that simple!
With a student-friendly system for learning and organizing, everyone wins…
Students quickly develop greater confidence in themselves and have an increased sense of motivation after learning how school can be easier!
Parents find that homework battles disappear once they have learned how to help their child study better and how to communicate more effectively.
Teachers discover that significantly more homework is turned in on time, less time is wasted on lost assignments and supplies, and students score better on quizzes, tests, and writing assignments.
Administrators are happy when scores on standardized tests increase because students have not only learned how to take tests but have learned how to think more critically.
“I was getting C’s and D’s. Now I am getting A’s and B’s! I learned how to be organized and how to study…it has made such a difference!” – Katie H., 11th grade student
“Life is so much easier!” – Holly Zabik, 9th grade student
